João Carlos is a highly skilled and versatile photographer whose work encompasses various genres, including fashion, advertising, and fine art photography. Born to Portuguese parents in New York, João’s multicultural background and experiences in both cities have shaped his unique artistic perspective.
With an early passion for visual storytelling, João’s journey as a photographer began at a young age. His artistic exploration initially started with painting and fine arts, leading him to pursue formal education at the esteemed Ar. Co Institute of Art and Visual Communication in Lisbon.
João collaborates with advertising agencies, magazines, and renowned fashion apparel and beauty brands worldwide as a freelance photographer.
João’s photography is characterized by his keen attention to detail and a profound understanding of composition and lighting. Whether capturing striking fashion editorials, creating compelling advertising campaigns, or exploring the depths of fine art projects, he consistently produces visually captivating and emotionally engaging imagery.
His technical expertise, combined with his artistic sensibility, allows João to reveal the true essence of his subjects. Through his portraits, he skillfully conveys the attitudes, emotions, and unique stories of the individuals he photographs.
In recognition of his exceptional talent, João was honored with the prestigious Hasselblad Master Award in 2010. In 2019, he received nominations for European Photographer of the Year in Portrait and Fashion categories. Most recently, in 2023, João was named Portuguese Photographer of the Year, further cementing his position as a leading figure in the photography industry.
Continually pushing the boundaries of his artistry, João also dedicates himself to ongoing fine art projects.
