The poem tells the story of a mysterious woman living alone on the island of Shalott, near King Arthur’s Camelot. She is cursed to remain in her tower, forbidden from looking directly at the outside world. Instead, she must watch life go by through a mirror and weave what she sees into a tapestry. The Lady of Shalott’s tragic fate unfolds when she glimpses Sir Lancelot and, captivated by his presence, defies the curse to look directly at Camelot. This act of rebellion leads to the breaking of her mirror and ultimately to her demise, as she sets out on a doomed journey down the river to Camelot.
